At Beltane, it was believed that the fairies emerged from their underground dwellings (known as fairy forts) & caused mischief by stealing food & cattle. Samhain, on the other hand, was a time when the barriers between the supernatural world & the mundane world were believed to be at their thinnest, allowing fairies to roam more freely. Fairies were often thought to possess the ability to change their shape & size, & could appear as both beautiful & terrifying creatures. They were known to be skilled musicians & dancers, & were often depicted wearing shimmering clothing made from leaves & flowers. Celtic lore also tells of fairies who acted as guardians of nature & the environment, punishing those who caused harm to the earth & its creatures. They were believed to be protectors of animals, especially cows, & would punish those who mistreated them. While fairies were often described as benevolent beings, they were also known for their mischievous nature. It was believed that if one did not show proper respect to the fairies, they could be punished in a variety of ways, such as being led astray in the forest or plagued by bad luck. Today, the legacy of fairies in Celtic mythology lives on in popular culture, with stories & imagery of these magical creatures appearing in books, movies, & artwork.
