Description
We instantly fell in love with this very fine porcelain cup that was made during the 1805 period in England . It just screams quality & no wonder as this beautiful cup was produced by English porcelain manufacturer Miles Mason (b 1752 - d 1822), a variation of pattern 174. Miles Mason married Ruth Farrar who was the daughter of Richard Farrar; Mr Farrar was an experienced & successful ceramics merchant who dealt internationally in glass & china. Miles made many valuable contacts when working at his father in law's business. During the late 18th century Miles Mason began manufacturing his own high quality porcelain, initially in a series of partnerships. Miles Mason was very successful! Interestingly, it was Miles Mason's son, Charles James Mason (b 1791 - d 1856) who was the founder of the famous Mason's ironstone china. Charles James Mason married Sarah Spode who was the granddaughter of Josiah Spode, founder & namesake of Spode. So many members of the top English porcelain producers intermarrying. The cup features an en grisaille printed design from the 'classical arts' or 'liberal arts' series with unusual scenes of the personifications of the elements: earth, fire, water?? The quality of the print is astonishing, it is one of the most detailed designs we have seen! The cup also features ornate buttery gilt detailing, still so vibrant even after all these years. We love the kick handle, this really is a fine example of early 19th century English porcelain. This is the perfect item for anyone who has a passion for early ceramics or all things Georgian & classical! Measuring: Width including handle 3 inch (9.5 cm) by height 2 inch (5.5 cm). Condition: Old hairline to rim. Light surface wear to foot rim. Reference: Accession number: 1989.FA.17 , Art UK, The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery.
