In early Japanese poetry the seasons were often symbolised by the Snow, Moon & Flowers. Eleven centuries later Utagawa Hiroshige expressed the enduring appeal of these symbols in a series of three triptychs. This stunning set of three woodblocks, 'Evening View of Eight Famous Sites of Kanazawa by Moonlight' is the the third in the series & takes its inspiration from a full moon over a beautiful aquamarine coastline in Kaga prefecture. The arrangements of colour & small details in these prints are fantastic. Across the horizon gentle lilacs & indigos combine to represent the dying of the light as new life is expressed by the small flock of birds set against that magnificent moon. in the bay, little fishing boats & trading vessels come & go. Breathe in while looking at this triptych & you can almost smell the pine needles & the sea. Sublimely peaceful, this is one of our very favourite works of Japanese art.
