Iconic print of the Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. Intriguingly, many people assume the focus of this image is the tumultuous sea due to the title. Unfortunately Great Wave off Kanagawa is a mistranslation of the original title -the correct translation is Under the Wave off Kanagawa, which directs the viewer to the true focus of Hokusai's attention - Mount Fuji, rising imperially in the background under the crest of the enormous wave. This woodblock image was in fact created by Hokusai as the first of thirty six images in the collection Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji. Fittingly, an enormous wave towering over a much revered icon of Japanese strength symbolised a very turbulent period in Japanese history when the country started to re-open its borders after an international isolation lasting nearly 200 years. Notably, this print is renowned for its extensive use of Prussian Blue, the first time Hokusai had used this new colour in his work. + Welcome - we hope you find something you love!
