Los Vejigantes I (wood burning Art) Width: 7 inches Depth: .5 inches Height: 5 inches Unframed A vejigante is a mischievous character from medieval Spain that has become part of Puerto Rican festival celebrations - it's mainly seen during Carnival time. Traditional colors of the Vejigantes were green, yellow, & red or red & black. Today, Vejigantes wear brightly colored, ornate masks corresponding to the colors of their costumes that detail bat-like wings. The masks are typically made in the cities of Ponce where they are made from paper mach or Loiza where they are made out of coconuts. The artwork will be wrapped & carefully placed in a box before mailing. Pyrography or pyrogravure is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning. The term means writing with fire, from the Greek pur & graphos. All images are copyright & may not be reproduced without permission.
