Description
The Ersari knots have wide borders comprising two or three colored usually Turkoman gul patterns completed with wide plain-colored ends. The selvages are broad rows of extra-weft reinforcement, often taking in five or six warps reinforced with brown wool & goat hair. Overall, the Ersari rugs are substantially made with thick wool warps, occasionally twined with horsehair & dense, almost board-like wefts; all the patterning is worked in slit-weave or double-interlock weave. The wool in this rug is very special it's from the neck of sheep & this very soft wool. The Uzbeks of the Sherberghan area have in the past twenty years copied Ersari rugs & kilims, in a very much abbreviated & simplified fashion that changes the scale of the rectangles & motifs, often using wool shorn from slaughtered sheep in combination with poor dyes that give little luster & abrash.
