Large hand-thrown, stoneware bowl. Glazed in a satin matte, very pale green ash glaze. There is a decorative spiral in the bottom & the glaze has crystallised in part during cooling. The foot has been coated in a rich, iron baring slip made from clay, dug just outside the pottery. Fired to 1300C in a large wood-fired kiln. Early in 2019, I realised a long-held ambition & built a large wood-fired kiln. Where possible I incorporate local materials, which connect my pots inextricably with the place they are made; wood ash, from the pottery stove for making pale green & glassy green, runny glazes. I also dig the local 'wild' clay from the ditch just outside my workshop, which I use as slip on many of my unfired pots; producing rich, iron browns. All of this gives the pots great variety & depth of tonal variation. This is enhanced still further during the firing. The pots are fired to 1300C, in a kiln fuelled by wood. Some are blessed by the process of the fire & gifted with 'fly ash' & others are 'toasted' to rich oranges & tans by the path of the flame.
