Our contemporary & timeless colourful woven kilim rugs are made from organic sheep's wool & natural plant pigments such as Indigo, Henna, Saffron & Poppy seed, all sourced locally from the remote Ait Ouaghrda region of the Southern Moroccan desert where our artisans live. These fully reversible kilims are less a rug & more a work of art. They are sometimes called Picasso rugs due to the often abstract nature of their designs, reminiscent of the style of painting made famous by Pablo Picasso. They can often be found hung on the walls of homes & art gallery's around the world. Our founder lived with these tribespeople for several weeks & got to know them intimately. He found them to be an incredibly gentle & nature-loving peoples. They live in tune with the seasons & you can often find a lot of symbols in their rugs which are inspired by the rugged & beautiful countryside that surrounds & inspires them. Due to the small number of artisans with the required skills to make these stunning rugs they are rarely found outside of Morocco and, in fact, it is even hard to find them in Morocco itself due to the collectability of these rugs which often sell to the highest foreign investor. Having forged a working relationship with these artisans we are proud to bring you a small but exceptional collection of these rugs every few months, exclusive to Moroccan White & Etsy & unrivalled anywhere in the world for the beauty of their design & the quality of their craftsmanship. First the wool is bought from the local market & then dyed naturally before it is woven on a loom to create a unique design. The rug is often left in the sun for weeks to dry it out & to mute the colours to give them a softer look where desired. The whole process can take up to four-six months for a large rug.
