This is a large decorative manta ray wall hanging, made from driftwood, by Devon artist Neil Hampson. I collect the driftwood from the beaches of Sidmouth, Devon where I live. I then wash it, & let it dry naturally. The driftwood is glued into place, & I build it up in layers to produce an intricate latticework effect. I have created this from naturally dark pieces of wood. I give the wood a few coats of spray varnish to protect, & bring out the natural colour of the wood. I have then hand finished this with yacht varnish, to produce a rich, glossy appearance. This is signed & dated on the back by the artist, using an engraver. The piece is strung on the back, so ready to hang, & is a lovely addition to any room. Each item I make is unique, & you will receive the piece that is pictured. This is a larger sized work of mine, measuring 40cm ( 16 in.) from nose to tail, & 64cm ( 25 in.) wide, from wingtip to wingtip. The depth is 5cm ( 2 in.)
