Description
This piece was fired for seven days in the University of Notre Dame's wood-fired Ana-gama (climbing kiln) at ND professor Bill Kremer's studio in Mid - May of 2021. We added a combination of soda ash & baking soda to the kiln on day seven of the week-long firing of about 300 cups, mugs, teapots, & large scale vessels. The soda helps flux the developing wood ash that has organically settled on the surface of the ware that results in a glass surface on the multi-hued pottery. Often you will see white spots on the bottom of the forms. This is where wadding, a refractory material made to the consistency of cookie dough & rolled into marble-like shapes are glued to the pottery to prevent them from fusing to the shelves during the firing. These marbles resist melting up to 3000 degrees fahrenheit & are, usually, easily removed from the pottery upon the cooling of the kiln. The 13 fluid ounce mug has an imprint from a Pennsylvania auto license plate as well as a herringbone pattern on the foot for both decoration & function. Enjoy your favorite hot or cold beverage from this handmade stoneware mug! University Of Notre Dame Kiln, Wood Fired, Soda Glazed Mug With Pennsylvania Handle
