This 1985 reproduction of Fritz Lang's epic expressionist science-fiction film by written by Thea von Harbou. It shows the robot, MARIA, one of the only robotic characters from early science fiction. The backdrop is in beautiful art deco, & the poster is one of the stand out examples of early movie poster history. Printed by Editions Speciales Paris France, which although are reproductions are of outstanding quality. Printed on lithographic press, on thick high quality archival paper. Dimensions: 27.5 in x 19.5 in (70 cm x 50 cm) Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction silent film directed by Fritz Lang & written by Thea von Harbou in collaboration with Lang from von Harbou's 1925 novel of the same name (which was intentionally written as a treatment). It stars Gustav Frhlich, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, & Brigitte Helm. The silent film is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction movie, being among the first feature-length movies of that genre. Made in Germany during the Weimar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia & follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, & Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city & bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. The film's message is encompassed in the final inter-title: The Mediator Between the Head & the Hands Must Be the Heart. Critics found it visually beautiful & powerful - the film's art direction by Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut, & Karl Vollbrecht draws influence from opera, Bauhaus, Cubist, & Futurist design, along with touches of the Gothic in the scenes in the catacombs, the cathedral & Rotwang's house. Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear & tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, & edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm.
