It shows the Norman Gatehouse in front of the Keep built by Maurice the engineer. This poster shows the Constable's Tower which is the main gatehouse of the outer bailey. Dover Castle is situated upon the White Cliffs of Dover. Printed by Harrison & Sons. Dimensions: 30.7 in x 20.5 in (78 cm x 52 cm) Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent, England. It was founded in the 11th century & has been described as the Key to England due to its defensive significance throughout history. It was during the reign of Henry II that Dover Castle began to take the recognisable shape it has today with the building of the inner & outer baileys & the great keep. It was built with one purpose in mind, to inspire awe & demoralise any thinking of invading from the continent. From 1179 to 1188, the King spent over 6,500 on the castle, an enormous sum, considering that his annual revenue was likely around 10,000. One important reason for this rebuilding may have been the new pilgrimage route to Thomas Becket's shrine in Canterbury. With no substantial properties in Kent, Henry needed a magnificent & impressive setting in which to receive & accommodate important visitors making the journey. Dover faces France across the Strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel, & lies south-east of Canterbury & east of Maidstone. The surrounding chalk cliffs are known as the White Cliffs of Dover. Archaeological finds have revealed that the area has always been a focus for peoples entering & leaving Britain. The name derives from the River Dour that flows through it. Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear & tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn or stained. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, & edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the vintage charm. When framed these colourful & detailed posters, with vibrant colours can become a centre piece for any room, to remind us of a simpler time. These posters are sent as unframed. They will be delivered in a cardboard tube for protection. See the FAQ for more information on shipping, tracking & insurance options.
