1992 Royal Academy of Arts Poster, Hokusai, The Great Wave off Kanagawa 1831, artist gallery exhibition, wall art decor This exhibition poster is from the Royal Academy of Arts for an exhibition in 1992 featuring Hokusai. The art included in the poster is The Great Wave off Kanagawa , which is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. It was published around 1831 in the late Edo period as the first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The image depicts an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast in the Sagami Bay while Mount Fuji rises in the background. Sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a large rogue wave. It is Hokusai's most famous work & is often considered the most recognizable work of Japanese art in the world. Dimensions: 30.3 in x 20.1 in (77 cm x 51 cm) Katsushika Hokusai , was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter & printmaker of the Edo period.Hokusai is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the internationally iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai created the monumental Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji both as a response to a domestic travel boom in Japan & as part of a personal obsession with Mount Fuji. It was this series, specifically The Great Wave off Kanagawa & Fine Wind, Clear Morning, that secured his fame both in Japan & overseas. While Hokusai's work prior to this series is certainly important, it was not until this series that he gained broad recognition. What is special about exhibition & gallery posters is that they are an affordable way of getting good, unique art on the walls, as although it is not an artists original, neither is it something that has been mass reproduced. Because of the age of these posters, there are areas of wear & tear, particularly on the edges. I have done my best to take photos where they are torn. The good news is that when framed, the tears press up well against glass, & edges can be hidden by mats. Any wear picked up from years are part of the charm. These posters are sent as unframed. They are delivered in a cardboard-backed envelope for protection. They have been stored folded.
