It was late & I was driving across the country from Michigan to Utah. I wanted to get to Moab as soon as possible because I knew we would have to get up early to get the sunrise photo I wanted. My wife & I have been to Moab many times & have taken hundreds of photos, but never the one we were going for this time. Mesa Arch. Canyonlands offers many photographic opportunities but to capture Mesa Arch properly, it would have to be photographed at sunrise. So, we set our alarms for 4am & off we went. The road was dark with no lighting or signage. The attendant at the hotel told us about where it was. We found a dirt clearing that had a couple of cars parked there, so we decided to take a chance. My wife & I have been to many unusual places to take photos & we have almost always been able to find the shot we were looking for, so we were determined not to miss this opportunity. We started out with tripod over my shoulder & head lamps on. The trail was hardly a trail. This is a high desert area with a lot of rocks & soft sand. We continued knowing that if we took too long, we could miss the sunrise entirely. As we approached the arch, we realized we were not alone. To our surprise there were about 20 to 30 other photographers with tripods set up waiting. Trying to find the best spot to set up would be impossible. Then it happened, the sun was breaking the horizon, & it was incredible, & I was not where I had to be to get the picture I needed. All I could hear was cameras clicking continuously. Then something wonderful happened. The photographer in front of me, after taking his photos, stepped aside so I was able to get the shot I wanted. Walking back to the car I felt great. Not only because I got the shots, we wanted but also knowing that my fellow photographer knew what it meant to me & stepped aside.
