Description
This piece has tightly woven wicker & a great minimalist design. It still bears the original sticker 'made in china'. The photo of the base has no damage (lighting artifact in the photo). The vessels used in ikebana are designed to maximize the life of the flowers & allow oxygen to reach the water & plants. They tend to be soft pastel shades & bronzes to enhance the beauty of the plants. Bamboo makes a charming vase, but solid bamboo is often not practical in some countries outside of Japan where the vases originate because of climate, so vases may be lined with porcelain or ceramic. Made in China? Isn't that a sign that this is some cheap junk? I've recently experienced some confusion about the art in this shop that I'd like to clarify: First, the pieces of Chinese handicraft & art that I am selling are mid-century or earlier, meaning they are made pre-industrialization (pre-1978) & are not mass produced; These are handmade artisan pieces. in other words, in the mid-twentieth century, the made in China label had very different connotations than it does today: It was a sign of something exciting & rare & unique. Evidence of the originality of these pieces by having their export tags (made in China) still on them is a sign of their maintenance & quality. Second, as a result of poor cataloguing & access during the more closed period of the mid twentieth century, much of this art is exceedingly rare & undescribed. The collection that I am selling is one of the larger private ones to go up for sale in the United States in the last decade. Third & more broadly, the origin of a good does not determine its worth: Even today, Chinese artists & artisans are producing beautiful pieces that are coveted by museums, collectors & designers though today's artists likely wouldn't use the tag 'made in China' because of its social stigma.
