I enjoy carving this ear of wheat design onto my pottery. It's so simple, & yet so beautiful. Now that I have made a few, I also find it intuitive & can play with all the different directions that the pattern lays. Every time I unload one of these from the kiln, I feel pleased with it. I find it harder to get that satisfaction from my more complex designs. This one isn't huge, I can make gurt big one's though it you'd like one. I just only do those occasionally because my kiln is very small & they take up such a lot of room! Process I always loved mud, but now I get to play with it for a living. Iron content in the clay is what makes it rusty brown in colour. I throw the body of the pot on my treadle wheel, which I inherited from my mother. A few days later when the pot has dried a little, I pull a handle for it. After another day or so, I dip it into a watered down white clay 'slip'. Again I wait, until the pot is almost dry & ready to be decorated. How fast they dry depends on the weather. I fire the pot once, glaze it & fire it again. The kiln heats up all day long & I don't open it until the following morning. All together it is at least a week long process, but lots of that time is spent waiting. Texture A good strong pot will be held by many hands, over many years. Selling my work online comes with the challenge of describing textures. How a piece feels can be the reason that we love it, or not! My engraved pots have a rough texture, which keeps me engaged personally. But if you are a lover of the gloss finish, they may not be for you. That being said, they are not dry or matt in finish either. It really is a challenge to describe. Post I care about nature & do my best to cherish it. I reuse & recycle where I can. My packaging materials are biodegradable. If you have hay fever, please let me know, as I usually pack local parcels with dried grasses. So as not to spread grass seeds outside of England, parcels abroad are packed with paper scraps from an artist friend. Hay is messy by nature & my friend is a fan of charcoal, so a little dust is to be expected. Please rinse your new pot, before using it for the first time.
