Lavender, the Queen of Medicinal Plants...and Tourism in Provence From the end of June until mid-August, the fields of Haute Provence (inland from the coast & higher) turn purple & the scent of lavender fills the air. It is the number one tourist attraction in Provence, & one of the top 10 in all of France. These picturesque rolling fields so alluring to photographers & instagramers may soon become a thing of the past. This aromatic plant has been known since pre-Roman times. It grows wild in the high northern reaches of Provence, where it used to be harvested by peasants eking out a living from the rocky soil long before Hollywood, Peter Mayle, & the rest of the world discovered Provence. It has a host of scientifically documented medicinal properties, including slowing the activity of the nervous system, improving sleep quality promoting relaxation & lifting of the mood in people with sleep disorders. It can be used for local infections, as an alternative to antibiotics, in reducing dental anxiety, or to prevent the formation of biofilm on teeth. It has proven antibiotic qualities, & has been known for its cleansing properties for so long that the modern French word, laver, & the old Roman word, lavare, both come from the name of this aromatic & much-loved plant. Due to the back-breaking ruggedness of the lifestyle of old Provence, lavender cultivation & harvesting was in the decline in the early 20th century. Its reprieve came from the widespread adoption of mechanical washing machines in the 1920s. The requirement for a pleasing scent to add to washing products created a surge in demand for lavender that has not abated since. There are two types of lavender grown in Provencelavender, the pure & most potent form, & lavandin, based on a hybrid developed in Bulgaria & imported back into France to meet the demand for scents to be added to detergent. Lavandin is often advertised as lavender, but purists object that its scent & medicinal properties are far less. Lavender grows only at higher elevations in Provence, such as the Valensole plateau, whereas lavandin is found at lower elevations. The plants are easily distinguished, as lavender produces only one set of blooms per stalk, whereas the stalks of lavandin branch with flowers on the end of each branch. Sadly, seeking those fragrant stretches of lavender is becoming a more difficult task. It's a common experience for photographers like myself to hear about or even find a photogenic lavender field with the requisite tree or farm shed in the distance, only to return there the following year to find no lavender plants whatsoever. Climate change & other factors are challenging the very existence of lavender cultivation, & fields in the future will have to look every different if they are to survive. Hotter summers are increasing the population of mini leafhoppers related to Provence's beloved cicadas. These insects devastate crops both by eating them & also by transmitting a disease which
