THIS GROUND DESIGN: Back in the early 80's Old Trafford felt positively space-age compared to most British football grounds, thanks in no small part to the incredibly influential cantilever roof which ran around the United Road Stand & Scoreboard End. The above two pictures were taken by me on a tour of Old Trafford in 1985, & show two angles of the roof from pitch level. By the mid-2000's virtually every other middle-sized provincial football club in England, from Sunderland to Southampton, had copied this design for their own new stadiums. As a former structural steelwork draughtsman, & in homage to its lasting legacy, I have used accurate scaling techniques to recreate Old Trafford's cantilever roof in its early 80's form here, in this original graphic mug. PROCESS My designs all start off on an old fashioned drawing board with pencil, scale rule, set square & paper. Using my skills as a draughtsman, together with various drawings & photographs as references, I create a pencil drawing, which is then recreated digitally. The aim is to produce a simple, minimalist graphic of an iconic structural or architectural element of a football ground or stadium, which discerning fans will be able to recognise & relate to. The final digital image is then sent over to my printer, who prints it onto the mug & ships it direct to you. Please allow a week for delivery.
