As a way the Aztecs calculated time, it was perceived by earlier scholars as a calendar. Its center is typically interpreted as the image of the god Tonatiuh, within the sign Ollin, meaning movement, & represents the last of the Aztec cosmological eras, the Fifth Sun. The stone also prophesies end of the world eras through acts of God, reflecting Aztec beliefs about the cyclical nature of time. Around the central disk of Aztec sun stone depicting the sun god Tonatiuh are four squares representing the four eras that have passed. According to Aztec beliefs, the world was destroyed at the end of each era & then recreated for the next era. The actual stone is a massive carving, at 12 feet across & having a weight of about 25 tons. Basalt, the material used for making the Aztec Sun Stone, is a form of solidified lava commonly found in places where volcanoes are common. Although the Aztec Sun Stone may have been carved & erected from earlier Mesoamerican peoples such as the Olmecs, Aztecs in particular maintained the relevancy & importance of the Sun Stone. The Aztec Sun Stone image also has been adopted by modern Mexican & Mexican American/Chicano culture, & is used in folk art & a symbol of cultural identity.
