Description
Karel Rudolf Ditmar (1818 - 1895) was active in Vienna in 1839, where he & his brother, Friedrich, began trading in oil lamps. Advertised as the Ditmar Brothers, they opened their own metalwork facility which manufactured oil lamps in the 1840s & 50s. Karl Rudolf developed what was known as the Viennese Moderateur Lampe. This lamp had an adjustable oil supply mechanism, which was very practical & which came to dominate world markets. Lighting styles evolved & lamp bodies changed from metal bases to ceramic ones, given an inherently infinite number of design possibilities they offered. To meet the demand & to keep up with changes in style, Rudolf open an art ceramics factory in Znojmo in 1879. This was the first of its kind in Europe. The purpose was originally to manufacture lamp bodies in earthenware, but porcelain was also experimented with. The operations officially commenced in 1880. At that time, production was focused mainly on lamp bases, rustic dinnerware & majolica. By 1884, the production shifted focus to health products & ceramic sinks & bathtubs. in 1890, the company added the fabrication of beer steins to its activities. Given the excellent quality of its offerings, Ditmar enjoyed success in markets all across Europe. By the end of the century, the company was directed by the brothers Richard & Oskar Lichtenstern, & had offices not only in Prague, Milan, Zurich, Hamburg, but also as far afield as Bombay, where 600 workers were in its employ. Rudolf Ditmar died in 1895. in 1910, the company re-named Rudolf Ditmar Erben (heirs) was purchased by the K. u. K. privilegierte Wilhelmsburger Steingut- und Porzellanfabrik & it merged with the Brothers Urbach of Teplitz-Turn, (now Teplice-Trnovony, Czech Republic). Ditmar-Urbach AG, Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia & Austria & the Urbach brothers all joined forces, producing on an even grander scale. in 1913, the companies were purchased by Triptis A.G. However, the Ditmar factory became independent after World War I, when the factory was confiscated by the newly established state of Czechoslovakia in 1919. It was established under the ownership & direction of Richard Lichtenstern as Ditmar-Urbach. Given the enormous political upheavals of the era, it was confiscated by the Austrian Government as part of the Anschluss in 1938, when it was re-named Ostmark-Ceramics A.G., & nationalised in 1945. in 1947, Richard Lichtenstern's son, Kurt, who had emigrated to the U.S. & changed his name to Conrad H. Lester, re-claimed the company & changed its name to SPAG (sterreichische Sanitr-Keramik-u. Porzellan Industrie AG). The company changed hands again in 1967, when it was acquired by the Keramik Holding Laufen, now part of the ROCA group. Made in Czechoslovakia (the previous name of the Czech Republic) is a popular term with collectors. First used as a trademark when the country was established in 1918, it appears on the company's glass & porcelain decorative items. Ditmar's work was exquisitely hand
