Description
This 10-ounce big coffee mug hot chocolate, teacup, or a soup mug has plenty of capacity. The mug is made of ceramic clay & red gloss glaze on the inside & round the base & rim. I used red heart transfers with a clear glaze over the transfers to accent the heart indentations. I tell her or him that you love them! The mug is 3 inches diameter at the rim & is 3.85 inches high. The handle makes it easy to control a mug this size. The mug weighs 9.7 ounces. I use zinc & lead-free glazes on my kitchen ware, so it is food, microwave, & dishwasher safe. I have discounted this mug $5 because of the unusual red pattern on the rim. This mug is safe to use & drink from. A potter is someone who likes to play in the mud, or shall I say clay, to transform a lump into something useful, decorative, or both. I use several techniques to build my pieces: wheel throwing, hand building, carving, & sculpting. All my pottery is handmade; therefore, you may discover slight imperfections. Think of them as a craftsman's hallmark, not flaws. They are like fingerprints, making each piece unique. Pieces may vary in size, & glazes often flow in diverse ways, but each piece is exactly as it should be & signed by the artist. MOLD POURED MUG. Clay is a very flexible material & thus can be thinned & poured into a mold. Once the clay has cured, the mold can be opened leaving the object (in this case a mug). Once out of the mold, the pottery is finished to create a smooth finish. Once the item has been finished it is processed the same way as any other piece of pottery. This mug is one of those purchased mold pieces. FIRING. I fire each piece at least twice. The first is called a bisque firing to remove most of the water, leaving it porous to absorb the glaze. After glazing it is fired to a higher temperature, about 2,000 F. I often use an underglaze to enhance texture or design, but some glazes will do that all by themselves. GLAZES. Methods of adding eye appeal are endless, beginning with the glaze. On mugs I always use lead free, dinnerware safe glazes. The end results are not always predictable because where the mug is placed in the kiln can effect its outcome. For example, the same glaze could look different if the mug were in a hotter area. & there are thousands of colors & effects made possible by layering two or more glazes.
