HANDBUILDING. Before the potter's wheel was invented, there was hand building. in fact, hand-built pottery has been around since 28,000 BCE. I begin by rolling out slabs of clay that can be cut into simple objects like ornaments or hand shaped into cups or mugs. I add texture & embellishments to make each piece unique. FIRING. I fire each piece at least twice. The first is called a bisque firing to remove most of the water, leaving it porous to absorb the glaze. After glazing it is fired to a higher temperature, about 2000F. I often use an underglaze to enhance texture or design, but some glazes will do that all by themselves. GLAZES. Methods of adding eye appeal are endless, beginning with the glaze. On mugs I always use lead & zinc free, dinnerware safe glazes. The end results are not always predictable because where the mug is placed in the kiln can effect its outcome. For example, the same glaze could look different if the mug were in a hotter area. & there are thousands of colors & effects made possible by layering two or more glazes.
