The Bottle Vase Project in 2009 I read an article about 'the plastic soup', an area as big as Spain, France, & Portugal together in the Pacific Ocean where all plastic trash piles up just underneath the water surface. The plastic in this area comes from all over the world, also from my own hometown. I started to look near the banks of this river called Maas & found all kinds of plastics, from injection needles to toys to cleaning detergent bottles. I collected all & took it home. There I found that once out of the mud, these objects actually had a very aesthetic side as well, faded by the sun, & without labels, the objects had become quite attractive objects. This beauty I wanted to catch into a project to spread awareness on plastic pollution. I used porcelain to copy the bottles, a material that seems very opposite but in fact, does the same: it stays around forever. Later I started to clean beaches all over the world, & so many people joined. This bottle is part of the 'World Collection' with bottles from all over the world. This object is made from stained porcelain & high fired in Aveiro, Portugal. The outside of the vase is bisque which gives it a very matt look like faded plastics. The inside of the vase is glazed to make it waterproof & suitable as a vase. The bottle has my name on the bottom. The surface is as solid as possible, but since this is a handmade object you might find minor spots. The bottom of the bottle often has firing marks from the kiln. Stains can be removed with a brush & water & soap, rinse & then leave to dry on a towel. This bottle comes in a cardboard box with special safety inserts & a brochure. The bottle vases look good when you have several shapes & colors, but you could also try to display them with some real plastic bottles.
