The Bottle Vase Project in 2009 I read an article about 'the plastic soup', an area as big as Spain, France, & Portugal together in the Pacific Ocean where all plastic trash piles up just underneath the water surface. The plastic in this area comes from all over the world, also from my own hometown. I started to look near the banks of this river called Maas & found all kinds of plastics, from injection needles to toys to cleaning detergent bottles. I collected all & took it home. There I found that once out of the mud, these objects actually had a very aesthetic side as well, faded by the sun, & without labels, the objects had become quite attractive objects. This beauty I wanted to catch into a project to spread awareness on plastic pollution. I used porcelain to copy the bottles, a material that seems very opposite but in fact, does the same: it stays around forever. The outside of the stained porcelain is biscuit which gives a matt finish similar to plastic. The inside of the bottle is glazed to make it waterproof & suitable as a vase or container. The bottle is signed at the bottom. This series is handmade by Middle Kingdom Porcelain in Jingdezhen. The plastic bottles are used to create moulds. Pigmented liquid porcelain is poured into the moulds, leaving a thin layer that forms the shape. After drying, the inside of the bottle is glazed lead-free & fired at 1300 C. All this handwork is done by a team of seven craftsmen, therefore none of the bottles are exactly the same. The picture shown is an indication, minor changes in color are possible, depending on the place in the kiln. Overall the surface is smooth but small defaults do occur & should be considered as a quality of the product.
