Description
Presented is an antique, Dutch or German silver centerpiece of fruit bowl made in 1891. This 19th century piece was made in The Netherlands or Germany. This is a very ornate piece. The bowl is raised on 4 cast & applies leaf form feet & the sides & rim are done in an openwork form. The sides are decorated with applied festoons of flowers in between goat or ram's heads & the ends each have a knocker style handle emanating from the mouth of a lion's head. The rim is finely handle engraved with fruits, leaves, flowers & scrolls. The center of the bowl has a crest of a lion's head underneath the Spero for Hope. The underside bears the Dutch key & lion passant 833 purity silver mark. There is also a dater letter G, corresponding to the year 1891, near the bottom of one of the 4 feet. There are also German pseudo-hallmarks. I believe that this piece was made in Hanau Germany, then exported to the Netherlands & given Dutch hallmarks. Although the process could have happened in reverse. This piece is in very good condition, especially for its age. There are 3 dents to the base of the bowl, a little of which can be seen in the first & eighth photos. There are no breaks or repairs. The engravings & chased designs are crisp.
