I had always been drawn to the beauty of the countryside, & I particularly loved painting scenes of fields & farm life. So when my friend Walter Skrabek sent me a photo of a field of wheat stooks, I knew I had to capture the scene on canvas. I set up my easel in my studio & began sketching the outline of the stooks, carefully studying the photo to get the positioning & proportions just right. As I worked, I noticed the way the golden heads of the wheat caught the sunlight in the photo, & I mixed a warm, buttery yellow to capture the color of the ripened grain. As I painted, I felt a sense of connection to the land & the people who tended it. I imagined the farmers who had carefully tended the wheat, watching it grow tall & strong, & I felt a sense of gratitude for the abundance of the harvest. This work captures the beauty & sense of connection to the land that I had felt while looking at Walter's photo, & I hoped that others would feel the same when they saw my painting.
