Measurements: High 9 cm / 3.5 Diameter 7 cm / 2.7 Relish pot or jar entitled 'The Battle of Alma', Crimean War, 1854 This earthenware vessel was possibly made by T J & J Mayer at the Furlong Works & Dale Hall Pottery, Burslem in 1854. The design shows the Highland Brigade crossing the River Alma & storming the heights, watched by staff officers. James Thomas Brudenell, Seventh Earl of Cardigan (1797-1868), appears among the mounted officers in his elegant uniform of the 11th (or Prince Albert's Own) Regiment of Hussars. in the background the Allied ships ride at anchor in the bay. The notorious Brudenell was commissioned into the 8th (or King's Royal Irish) Hussars in 1824 and, through purchase, became Lieutenant-Colonel of the 15th Hussars in 1832. He commanded the 11th Hussars from 1836 until 1854 and, at the Battle of Balaklava, he led the Light Brigade during its fateful charge against the Russian positions.
