BUTTERFLY BLOOMS IS BORN Insect of Beauty Have you ever been inspired by reading a book? When I was a Library Director, the local kindergarten class would visit once a week. Not only would they get to check out books but I'd also read them a story. One book I read to them was about shapes. On the last page of the book it showed the shape of fractals. What are fractals? Fractals are shapes repeated like that of broccoli & cauliflower. Their shape stays the same & it doesn't matter what size their shape is, it doesn't change, even as it gets smaller. Plants, nature, & food is full of fractals. I never thought of my environment being full of fractals. BUTTERFLY BLOOMS, I called my first born, it's the result of inspiration by reading a book. The minute I read that, I began wondering how can I make this a part of my photography. After reading the children's book, I started experimenting with the use of fractals. It all started with a photograph I took of a red tulip with raindrops. I wanted to figure out if I could create something fantastic with fractals. How do I make a piece of artwork that I'm sure nobody else has. in reality, I know someone must have done this already but I can still make it my own. What I started to design isn't what I ended up with. It was kind of like 'it' wanted to be a butterfly not a sea shell. I started with a photograph of a red tulip I took. Using my computer program, I started to duplicate it & made layers. I tried for at least an hour to make a circle before I realized, I wasn't making any headway. What I was making was a butterfly wing. I relented & said ok, you want to be a butterfly not a sea shell. This is when BUTTERFLY BLOOM was born & I wanted her to soar. With the power of my editing program & creativity, I constructed a new species of butterfly. It kind of happened on purpose. The red tulip had raindrops on it, it hadn't bloomed, it was still growing in a flower garden. I purchased a macro lens recently & was trying it out. For the first time, I was able to get up close & personal with a flower. Through my lens, I saw the veins of petals. I captured reflections in the raindrops. I followed the stim all the way up to its bloom. Photographing the red tulip was like photographing a portrait of a person. At the time I didn't know I was going to turn her into a butterfly. I was visiting my daughter in Portland in the early spring. Having my new macro lens with me I was looking for subjects to photograph. Across the street was a flower garden full of tulips. With permission, I started to photograph those tulips of red, yellow, pink & white. Real Portland raindrops decorated the flowers. Raindrops gives such a refreshing look to a them. That is what gives BUTTERFLY BLOOMS its character. It gave me great joy to photograph flowers like I've seen in magazines. My flowers don't have to be specs in a photograph but be more dazzling. No longer is a flower going to hide in my photographs. The heart of photographing a
