Pottery Garlic Keeper Jar / Lidded Ceramic Pot / Garlic Storage Jar / Garlic, Chilli & Herb Storage Pot - Handmade in Buttercup Yellow Ceramic Stoneware Ready to Post - the exact garlic jar in the photos :) We eat lots of garlic & we love the French Butter Keeper that sits on our kitchen worktop so we decided a garlic storage jar to match would be a good idea. John put a lot of thought into the design (such as the ventilation holes towards the top which keeps the body of the inside dark to prevent sprouting, the gentle swell of the bowl to create a generous interior space & I particularly appreciate how the little knob handle is designed so it doesn't slip out of my buttery fingers! I use mine to store home-grown chillies & freshly gathered herbs along with the garlic cloves, & if they end up infused with the scent of garlic then so much the better. We were both so pleased how our own garlic jar turned out we have added it to our range of beautiful, functional ceramics. This latest in sunny buttercup yellow is such a bright & cheerful colour we couldn't resist.:) Hand-thrown by John on the potter's wheel using his own recipe recycled stoneware clay, it was then left overnight for the clay to stiffen a little before being turned again on the wheel to refine the shape & give it a nice neat bottom. At this stage the holes were cut by hand & the base stamped with our maker's mark, & on a whim, on the inside of this pot John added a cheerful little flower to brighten up a dull day.:) The pot was then set aside for a few days to dry out slowly & completely ready for the first kiln firing. Once cooled, this lovely glaze in sunny buttercup yellow was applied by hand just two thirds of the way down, finishing with a straight line around the pot where the glaze meets the clay, enhancing the contemporary design of natural unglazed clay left bare below the glaze. The body of the pot curves out to create a generous storage jar & the lid is neatly recessed into the top of the pot, with the handle in perfect balance with the whole. The underside of the pot is left bare , just sanded smooth so it sits perfectly flat on the worktop. Fired twice in the kiln with the final glaze firing reaching 1230 degrees Celsius, then soaked for a while to encourage the glaze to meld with the clay & create a durable container. Made of vitrified stoneware the fired pot is strong & robust so it can go in the oven as well as the microwave & dishwasher.
