An exceptional & rare Victorian solid mahogany pedestal desk with a leather top & hinged writing slope. Made by James Shoolbred, esteemed maker of fine furniture. These sought-after pieces of furniture are hard to find & in fact I've been unable to find another identical desk. The wood has a gorgeous, rich patina with small, expected signs of age (ink wear which I don't find detracts in the slightest) but the overall look & condition is superb. The central storage area is hidden behind a beautifully crafted tambour roll-top with original handles. Inside are many useful compartments, a lift-out pen tray & pen & ink storage. The details are exquisite. The drawers are smooth-running, clean & tidy. All fully locking with the original keys. No signs of woodworm either past or present, no musty smells. A stunningly beautiful & useful piece of furniture with a great many years of wear left in it. Relatively easy to move about on account of the original castors, though the piece is very heavy.
