A handcoloured antique 1874 engraving of the Newfoundland Cod Fishery industry, showing fishing boats off the coast, a cod caught by a jigger, the fish stage & fishermen's dwellings, & the curing house. Cod fishery was the mainstay of the economy in this Atlantic province. Published in an 1874 issue (the date is on the print, but not shown in the photos) of The Graphic, a British weekly illustrated newspaper that had tremendous influence in the art world, with many admirers, among them, Vincent van Gogh.
