Mercury About to Behead Argus, 1770, by Italian Renaissance painter Ubaldo Gandolfi, illustrates one of the most dramatic scenes of ancient Greek myth. Critical to Ubaldi's technique & modernity was his use of live models, clearly evident in this work's confident depiction of human anatomy. Zeus, King of the gods, has sent his messenger Mercury to behead Argus. Here we find Mercury peering back at the viewer, signaling to us to be quiet so as to not wake the sleeping giant.
