Materials: Wood frame, turned wood legs, original cream leather, black, lacquered detachable MDF boxes. Period: Designed in 1924, Manufactured in 1990s Designed by Eileen Gray in 1924, This beautiful sofa is a perfect mix of luxury & soft sensuality (duck down feather filled, soft leather cushions & black lacquered side boxes on castors) & simple functionality (remove the back cushions for a daybed & detach the lacquered sides to wheel around as tables). Gray trained in lacquer techniques in London before moving to Paris & setting up her own store, designing & creating for the Paris lite. Her lacquered 'Dragon' chair fetched the highest ever amount paid for a chair at auction in 2009 for a modest 19 million! Later, Gray moved away from the highly decorative work of her early career & became one of the pioneers for the clean lines & functionality of modernism alongside Le Corbusier among others. This movement culminated in her most iconic design the villa E1027. The Lota sofa combines the French Art Deco luxury of Gray's early career with the functional design of her modernist leanings. It is a delight to sit in & lie on, pure comfort. At a length of 2.4m, the sofa is a true statement piece. The sofa is still manufactured to this day by Classicon for Aram who hold the design license, a new model costs approx 6000. Eileen Gray Lota Sofa/Daybed in Cream Leather & Black Lacquer, 1924 Design
