Description
A Stowell & Co were the leading Boston (Massachusetts) silversmiths & jewellers throughout the 19th Century. Today they are largely forgotten other for some pieces in local museums. Their premises were at 24 Winter Street. The spoon is a heavyweight & fits into the hand wonderfully allowing you to really dig in to serve a pudding or similar. I think it would be a berry spoon abut maybe given its heavy gauge, it could be for ice cream. It is 23cm (9 inches) long & weights 149 gms (5 1/2 ounces) & is about double the weight of most spoons this size. It is slightly odd shaped with a flattened bowl with distinct hips. It is organic in deform & shouts art nouveau. When viewed from behind it could be taken as a flower bud emerging from its sepals .This is the basis of my dating attribution to about 1890 but that is just a guess. It is planished (hand beaten) front & back, the stem is also organic & has a tulip-like form & the finial has a very nicely engraved letter, which I think is probably a lower case h. There are two marks. The first is A Stowell & Co which was used between about 1860 & 1904 & the other is Sterling. Actually the A Stowell mark is really a retailers mark. Stowell sold items made by others including the Newbury Company who had a similar shaped spoon in their 1909 pattern book (in the Smithsonian Library).
