Have nothing in your home that you don't know to be useful or believe to be beautiful William Morris Josiah Spode - founder of the Spode Pottery manufacturer & known as Josiah Spode I even though his father is also a Josiah Spode. Born in 1733, the only son of poor parents in Lane Delph a village in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. His father died when he was 6 & was buried in a pauper's grave. From the age of 16 in 1749 Josiah was apprenticed to one of the best Potters in the area - Thomas Wheldon until he was 21. After his departure Spode seems to have worked for & in partnership with other Potters in the area. Spode established a business in Stoke on Trent. Spode is an integral part of Stoke on Trent industrial heritage for almost 250 years. Blooming Marvellous Teacup, hand painted with English Rose, Tulips & Peonies on gold ground. Gold tendrils border. Gold rim. The dimensions are 3 7/8 wide & 2 1/2 tall. Considering the age, the teacup is still in excellent antique condition, please study the photos carefully. This collection belonged to a British Pottery expert who passionately curated, catalogued & researched thousands of pieces from the mid 1750 to the early 1900.
