Born in 1733, the only son of poor parents in Lane Delph a village in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. His father died when he was 6 & was buried in a pauper's grave. From the age of 16 in 1749 Josiah was apprenticed to one of the best Potters in the area - Thomas Wheldon until he was 21. After his departure Spode seems to have worked for & in partnership with other Potters in the area. Spode established a business in Stoke on Trent. Spode is an integral part of Stoke on Trent industrial heritage for almost 250 years. Magnificent embellished teacup the pattern number is 3904. Opulent gold leaves, flowers & bunch of grapes over mazarin blue ground. Dainty handle. The dimensions are 3 7/8 wide & 2 1/4 tall. Considering the age, the teacup is in excellent antique condition.
