Flyknit Origins Nike Flyknit technology was inspired by feedback from runners craving a shoe with the snug (and virtually unnoticed) fit of a sock. Nike embarked on a four-year mission with teams of programmers, engineers and designers to create the technology needed to make the knit upper with static properties for structure and durability. Then the precise placement of support, flexibility and breathability—all in one layer—was refined. The result is a featherweight, form-fitting and virtually seamless upper. This unprecedented precision maximises performance while reducing the material waste of traditional cut and sew by an average of 60%. The equivalent of six recycled plastic bottles are used in every pair of Flyknit shoes, saving millions of kilos of material from reaching landfills. Nike Epic React Frequently Asked Questions: What are the main performance benefits of this shoe? The Nike Epic React Flyknit combines a Nike React foam midsole with a Nike Flyknit upper to deliver a lightweight and soft yet responsive ride, mile after mile. Nike React foam gives 13% greater energy return than Nike Lunar foam, while still delivering a soft and snappy ride. As a direct comparison to the Nike LunarEpic Flyknit 2, the Nike Epic React Flyknit is 5% lighter, 11% softer and provides 10% more energy return. What is Nike React? Nike React foam was developed in-house, and the unique composition gives runners foam that is lighter, softer, more responsive and even more durable than Nike Lunar foam. Historically, these four elements have been solved individually and it was difficult to deliver them in one package. However, Nike React technology delivers them in one. How durable is this shoe? Nike React was built to last for many miles. Nike React technology is a proprietary foam that is more responsive and more durable than Nike Lunar foam. We know from our testing that the more foam and less rubber protection on the outsole of the shoe, the better the experience of React. So we purposely went as minimal as possible with rubber coverage. In our testing, we did see and experience some wear and tear on the outsole foam, but we believe the benefit of the minimal outsole coverage outweighs the visible wear of the foam. And our testers said although it may wear visibly, there is no perceived degradation to the running experience. Does Nike Epic React fit to size? Flyknit material contours to the shape of your foot, creating a snug, hug-like feel that fits true to size. If you prefer a slightly looser fit, we recommend ordering a½ size up. Is Nike React made from EVA? No. The primary ingredient in Nike React foam is a synthetic rubber. The foam is proprietary to Nike—you won't find it anywhere else. How long was the development process? It took over 400 different combinations of chemistry and processing to land the unique composition of the Nike React foam midsole. In addition, we have undertaken 17,000 miles of testing with some of our elite and everyday runners. Was testing only undertaken in the US, or was it undertaken in other countries as well? Testing was undertaken globally—not just in the US. It is important to test in all conditions and on all surfaces to ensure it delivers the best performance for the runner. Which athletes have been involved in the development process? We have undertaken 17,000 miles of testing with some of our elite and everyday runners. Some of the elite runners include Eliud Kipchoge, Galen Rupp, Evan Jager, Emily Infeld and Colleen Quigley.
