Jean Rene Lacoste was born in Paris, France in 1904. Tennis legend Lacoste, is most famous for helping his French team defeat the USA in the Davis cup in 1927, not forgetting his three French open titles, two victories in Great Britain and two in America. He was nicknamed 'The Alligator' by the American press after a bet with a fellow team mate about an alligator skin suitcase. When his friend Robert George drew an alligator and had it embroidered on the blazer he wore on the courts, the brand was born. In 1933 Rene Lacoste and Andre Gillier, the owner and president of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm of the time, set up a company to manufacture the logo-embroidered shirt. Lacoste have since expanded into fragrances and can now boast some of the world's bestselling fragrances in their portfolio, e.g. Lacoste Style In Play, Lacoste Touch of Pink and more recently Lacoste Inspiration.
