Description
A onceexotic rarity, dried figs are thought to have been brought to the British Isles by the Romans. Valued for their flavour and medicinal properties, dried fruit, such as figs, were once used to season and preserve meat. Figgy pudding – or Plum Pudding, ‘plum’ being a general medieval description for any dried fruit – is thought to have originated in England in the 15th century. Banned by Cromwell as a ‘pagan’ aspect of the Christmas festivities, figgy pudding returned with the Restoration in 1660.
