In the olden days we used to call these 'Telephone Tables'. This was where the only phone in the home lived (yes, I'm serious!) I think it was deliberately placed in the coldest part of the house & the best spot for the whole family to be able to hear all of your 'private' conversations. Screams of Only after 6pm! & This costs money you know! could be heard from the living room. Happier times eh? Now, they make fabulous benches for the hallway. Somewhere to sit to put on your shoes & a handy drawer to keep loose change & keys. No more eavesdropping just functional & essential furniture :o) This bench was made by Remploy in the 1960s & is solid & sturdy. I have replaced the original foam & recovered the seat pad so that this piece complies with all current fire safety regulations. Remploy was originally established to directly employ disabled persons in specialised factories. It opened its first factory in Bridgend, Wales, in 1946 to employ disabled servicemen & retrain them in a number of skills including furniture making. Remploy is now a private company specialising in the employment & training of people with mental health disabilities.
