A whistled language is all they have to communicate. Only green soup (provided by the Soup Dragon) and blue string pudding are consumed by them. They were initially shown on BBC1 between 1969 and 1972, with a special episode airing in 1974 as a culmination of the series' run.Smallfilms produced the series, which was founded by Oliver Postgate (who served as the show's writer, animator, and narrator) and Peter Firmin (who was its modelmaker and illustrator). Joan Firmin, Firmin's wife, crocheted and "dressed" the figures after they were drawn by Firmin. Vernon Elliott supplied the music, which was often incorporated into the plot.Following on from a short special broadcast by the BBC earlier in the year, a third series, narrated by Monty Python actor Michael Palin, was broadcast in the United Kingdom from 15 June 2015 on the BBC's CBeebies TV channel, achieving hugely successful viewing figures and building on the success of the first two series. However, stop-motion animation is still used in the production of the new series, rather than computer-generated imagery, which had supplanted the original stop-motion animation in previous revivals of other children's shows such as Fireman Sam, Thomas & Friends, and The Wombles, among others.
