Description
A delicious 530g cherry and almond Christmas cake presented in a metal loaf tin. Packed with golden and dark red glacé cherries: a moreish, superbly moist cake with treacle, almonds and sultanas. Topped with flaked almonds, icing sugar and a marzipan star. Candied cherries were first imported to Britain in the 1870s when a merchant named Wood brought the fruit from the Provençal region of Apt; soon becoming a staple part of the British fruit cake. It is said that Winston Churchill – a fruit cake lover – even intervened to ensure Apt could continue to export candied cherries to Britain despite postwar rationing; making the cherries ‘essentialÂ’ rather than a ‘luxuryÂ’ ingredient.
