Description
String Furniture Shelf White Wood. Dimensions: L 50 x Depth 18 cm x H 190 cm - Upper shelf: L 50 x Depth 21.5 cm. Creating a floating illusion, the Cell shelving stands out with its breathtaking, ethereal design: this is a stunning architectural element which will enhance walls in a both discreet and original way. It is composed of 7 shelves (L 52 cm) suspended using steel cables. Extendible, adjustable, and extremely sturdy, the Cell shelving has been designed to last over the years and to adapt to your needs. Its unique and exclusive design is the product of leading-edge technology, with the aim of ultimate simplicity. The cables can be adjusted to a millimetre exact, thanks to the wheel on the top shelf. The height of each shelf can be adjusted easily thanks to the zinc bearings soldered onto the cable. Once the height has been adjusted to your taste, a magnetic holder system fixed into the wall will stabilise and rigidify the structure. Laterally, the Cell A shelving can be extended as you like, through the addition of extra B modules, to the right of the A module. Always begin your composition with an A module, then add the desired number of B modules to the right of the module. Designed by Peter Cohen in 2005, the Cell shelving straight away claimed several design accolades in Sweden. It is exhibited in the National Museum, in Stockholm. Continuing in the line of the famous Less is more by Miles van der Rohe, the Cell shelving embodies the designer's aspiration to use the most advanced technology to achieve ultimate simplicity. Peter Cohen is a multi-disciplinary creator (writer, film-maker, film producer, documentary director, furniture designer) with a degree from the University of Stockholm. He explains: I designed this shelving for someone with a lot of books. I needed to be extremely efficient in terms of space, but also aesthetically, in terms of sturdiness, and in terms of creating a lightweight design. The idea formed slowly, whilst I slept. I imagined a bridge with cables and pylons. I also visualised the form of a double helix, the shape of DNA, with its long and fine strands. Peter Cohen got to work on a prototype, based on a pair of metal cables with ball-shaped brackets at regular intervals. I had to search far and wide for someone who could produce them. I discovered that there were only two large industrial names who could, one of them being Swedish. Unfortunately, they showed no interest in my project. Yet, fortunately, they eventually changed their minds. Together, engineers and the designer developed the cable which Cohen had visualised. The shelves were also the subject of creative reflection and intelligent construction. I wanted shelves that were sturdy yet extremely lightweight. Finesse played an essential role for the appearance, and I needed shelves that could support a heavy weight without bending.. To achieve this, the shelves were made using highly-resistant steel. It is the same steel that is used to make cars crash-resistant. The thin shelf has a black edging to make the edges visible, in the form of fine lines, cutting through the air across the light, white and ethereal composition. In 2021, String released the Cell shelving, after a hiatus of several years. Technically and visually perfected, it isn't just robustly constructed, but is also manufactured in a unique way. Perhaps String may pay tribute to Cohen's history on this level: when you've spent more than half of your living making films, you understand the importance and value of the details, and you never give up, no matter how many years it takes to make sure something is done properly.
