British artist Jasper Morrison is one of the most acclaimed industrial designers of recent decades. A champion of the super-normal, he advocates sober, useful, responsible design. His creations can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and other collections of eminent museums around the world. Originally designed for a fairground in Japan, the Thinking Man's Chair was intended to be an extremely limited edition series product. An eloquent name for a product which calls for meditation and relaxation. Marking the beginning of the collaboration between the English designer and the Italian creative house of Cappellini, the Thinking Man's Chair has been in production since 1988. This armchair embodies visual simplicity, where the curve in itself is, to put it simply, enough. Jasper Morrison tells how, after having noticed a chair with a missing seat in an antiques market, he had the idea of basing an armchair design on purely structural elements. Thinking Man’s Chair is a piece centred around function: a useful design, where quality is prioritised. Jasper Morrison thus came up with a design in which all of the elements serve a specific function: ensuring long-lasting comfort when seated, meaning that you can sit back and truly relax. The tubular steel structure is like a reminder of the modernist seating of the 1920s and 1930s, which Jasper Morrison loved for their resistant and modular shapes which submitted to their function. The Thinking Man's Chair armchair appears to stretch out thanks to the two curves at the rear, extending to the bending armrests, to create a highly graphic style. The seat owes its suppleness to the flat metal bands, curved like those found in some garden chairs. The backrest is composed of two large curved bands. There are two small, circular trays at the end of each armrest, perfect for holding a glass and a bottle. Ideal for indoor and outdoor use, Thinking Man's Chair plays on the simplicity of a line consisting purely of curves, like an essential visual expression, leaving free reign to its function. Thinking Man's Chair is an armchair that makes you want to display like a sculpture, whether it's in the garden or in a living room.
