A national institution, the British Shipping Forecast is broadcast on longwave Radio 4, 4 times a day and tells sailors and fishermen on the British and Irish coasts what weather to expect in the coming hours. The forecast was developed by the world"s first weatherman, ViceAdmiral Robert FitzRoy in February 1861 in response to a passenger ship being wrecked off Anglesey in 1859.
