A Thonet model 10 bentwood rocking chair with cane-work seat & backrest. We believe this chair to date from the second quarter of the 20th century. The shape of this chair is simply gorgeous & makes me think of the stylised sinuous shapes used in art nouveau design. The Model 10 rocking Chair was designed by Michael Thonet (the inventor of bentwood furniture & the first maker of mass produced furniture) around 1860 - 1890, & we believe this example dates from the second quarter of the 20th century. It is an iconic design that has truly stood the test of time, & has featured in various artworks from the late 19th century onwards, including by Pablo Picasso who had a Thonet rocking chair in his studio. This chair is in excellent condition with recently renewed cane work seat & back. It has a few scuffs to the surface in accordance with age & use - please see the photos. It is stamped with 'M3' on the frame & is stamped 'made in Poland' under the seat. The approximate dimensions are: Width - 53cm Height - 104cm Depth - 105cm. We have another matching chair available.
