Description
RSPB The sounds of a seabird summer: open the card and a soundchip plays an accurate recording of a puffin, Herring gull and eider duck. Both the puffin and eider are threatened UK species, with Northumberland and Scottish coastal populations at risk. It is said that St Cuthbert instituted the earliest conservation legislation when, in the 8th century, he decreed that no nesting eiders should be disturbed or hunted on the Northumberland coast; the birds became known as ‘Cuddy’s duck’ in memory of this charity.
