Museum Selection 20 Birds & Blossom Cards
Description
Expressive cards, representing and reflecting European interpretations of the Japanese "kachoe" tradition, in which depictions of birds and flowers express transcience with elegant simplicity. Includes "Two Swallows on a cherry blossom branch", c.1920 by kachoe master Ohara Koson (18771945) and "Garden Warblers among rose trees by moonlight" by Nakayama Sugakudo (fl. 185061). The opening up of Japan to trade with the West in the mid19th century created a fashion for Japanese prints in European artistic circles. The Japanese printstyle and motifs are interpreted here in an illustration by L. Hohlwein for "Jugend" magazine in 1903 and a Silver Studio textile c.1938. 4 designs, blank. 5" x 3 ¾" and 4 ¾" x 3 ¼". Produced exclusively for Museum Selection.
