Football wise, the 1960s was a time when the game was blessed with true characters and outstanding players. It was the era of Best, Law and Charlton, the mercurial Jimmy Greaves and Sir Alf Ramsey’s victorious England. As Match of the Day moved into the 1970’s, the show’s viewing figures reflected the high profile of the nation’s favourite sport. A record audience of over 20 million people watched the 1970 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leeds, and by 1972-73 figures for Match of the Day were averaging 12 million, making it an essential part of the weekend’s TV viewing. With Jimmy Hill at the helm from 1973, the players of the 1970s such as Keegan, Hudson, Currie, Bowles and of course Best, were full of flair and a new type of professionalism. Dominated by Liverpool, whose phenomenal roll-call of honours was truly awe-inspiring, the 1980s was the decade of Bryan Robson, Dalglish, Hoddle, Lineker and Rush. Football remained compulsive viewing as millions watched Kendall’s Everton take their first League title for fifteen years and Wimbledon memorably beat Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final.
