Museum Selection Yew & Bryony Foliage Cards
Description
The Fitzwilliam Museum Elegant cards reproducing details from botanical studies of European Yew and Black Bryony by English naturalist James Bolton (17351799), from the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. A climbing, hedgerow plant, black bryony produces glossy, red berries in Autumn that were traditionally preserved for use decorating the house at Christmas. A similarly popular winter evergreen, yews have been long associated with sacred places and are frequently found planted in churchyards; while the exact reason in unknown it is thought this reflects an Ancient Celtic belief in the trees as a link between life and death and symbol of regeneration.
